When eighteen-year-old David Balfour discovers he is heir to a Scottish estate, his scheming uncle has him kidnapped and thrown aboard a slave-trading ship. Shipwrecked on the wild Highland coast with a fugitive swordsman named Alan Breck, David must cross a country at war to claim what is rightfully his.

1. The House of Shaws
Orphaned David Balfour sets out to claim his inheritance at the House of Shaws, but his uncle Ebenezer has other plans — a deadly staircase, a treacherous bargain, and a rowboat that carries David into captivity at sea.
2. The Round-House
Trapped aboard the slave-trading Covenant, David meets a fugitive Highland swordsman named Alan Breck Stewart. When the crew plots to murder Alan for his gold, the two must defend the round-house against the entire ship.
3. The Murder of the Red Fox
Shipwrecked and alone on a barren islet, David nearly starves before reuniting with Alan on the mainland. But their relief is short-lived — they witness the murder of the Red Fox, and suddenly all of Appin believes they are the killers.
4. The Flight in the Heather
With soldiers hunting them across the Highlands, Alan and David flee through wild mountains, trackless moors, and freezing rain. Exhaustion and fever push David to the breaking point, and a bitter quarrel nearly destroys their friendship.
5. Coming Home
David and Alan cross into the Lowlands at last and enlist a sharp-witted lawyer to outwit Uncle Ebenezer. With his inheritance secured, David must say goodbye to the friend who carried him through the worst journey of his life.
