After cholera leaves nine-year-old Mary Lennox alone in India, she is sent across the sea to a relative she has never met. Her brooding uncle lives in a vast old house on the windy Yorkshire moors, where everyone seems to be keeping a secret.

For days, Mary cannot stop thinking about the garden Ben Weatherstaff refuses to talk about, the one no one has entered for ten years. With a small bright-eyed robin and her own restless feet to guide her, she sets out to find a way in.

Mary now slips through the hidden door whenever she likes, but the garden is too big a secret for one person. She wants to share it with Martha's brother Dickon, the boy who can charm wild things. Then one stormy night, strange cries from a locked corridor pull her toward another secret entirely.
